Why I Stopped Freelancing as a Software Engineer
Why I Stopped Freelancing as a Software Engineer ? Ultimately, this post is about…have you chosen a path that is leading you towards your life goals?
Hey, it’s Gavin here!
I’m a…
I help businesses spend more time on things they enjoy, and create the foundations for their businesses to grow.
For the last 5 years, I’ve been travelling the world…
Meeting incredible people, learning A LOT about myself, and working online.
The journey started one night in Cape Town – my hometown. I had friends visiting from Germany. They had been traveling the world, working online, building their business. I knew this was always a possibility, every computer science graduate knows they could work online.
But, I have to honest, up until then I had been afraid. I didn’t have the confidence. I didn’t believe…
I liked structure, and I like knowing that I “knew”.
But something was different about tonight. It about a month before my birthday.
We were having a couple of drinks…
The ideas started flowing…
“Hey Gavin, how crazy would it be to celebrate your birthday in the Netherlands?!”
I don’t know why, but a switch flipped in my mind – the couple of drinks probably didn’t hurt.
“Hmm, imagine celebrating my birthday in the Netherlands, and then traveling around Europe”
But remember, I still had a full-time job. They did allow developers to work from home, but it was not full-time – except in special cases.
Nevertheless, I had a fire inside. Now was the time.
I went home, went on my PC at 2AM, and booked a flight to Amsterdam that would land just a few days before my birthday.
Now…I had to figure out the “job thing” and visa requirements (not that big of an issue, just lots of documents).
But to cut a long story short, that trip made me realize that I couldn’t go back to working in an office when I could have crazy experiences getting lost in the streets of Paris at 4AM to secret speakeasy bars in Barcelona.
Since then, I’ve been using my background in technology to help businesses save time, focus on the parts of their businesses that they enjoy, and take the overwhelm off their shoulders.
Naturally, the way I work with people has evolved as I’ve grown as a person and business owner.
I initially was a freelancer and contractor, I was doing all the work myself.
I realized though, after working with various coaches and mentors, that I’m not going to be able to achieve my goals on this path.
There are SO MANY smart people in the world, people who are passionate about working on new problems
